The sandwiched transducer is one type of the ultrasonic transducers with metal pieces clamping at both ends of the piezoceramic discos, it is mainly used in power and underwater ultrasound applications
Because the structure is first proposed by Paul Langevin, the French physicist, it is also called Langevin transducer sometimes.
One of the advantages of this structure is that it makes full use of the longitudinal mode of piezoceramics and gets the lower resonant frequency as well. Also, because the piezoceramics has the characteristic of low tensile strength itself, it is much easier to be cracked under the high power. However, by the application of this structure, the piezoceramics remains in the compressed state under the intense vibration so that the cracks of piezoceramics could be avoided.
